Middle School Students who Felt Sad or Hopeless

Measurement Period: 2021-2022 School Year
This indicator measures middle school students who felt so sad or hopeless almost every day for two weeks or more in a row that they stopped doing some usual activities during the past 12 months.
This data was self-reported through the Michigan Profile for Healthy Youth (MiPHY), an online student health survey offered by the Michigan Departments of Education and Health and Human Services to support local and regional needs assessment. The MiPHY provides student results on health risk behaviors including substance use, violence, physical activity, nutrition, sexual behavior, and emotional health in grades 7, 9, and 11. The survey also measures risk and protective factors most predictive of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use and violence.

Why is this important?

Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States, presenting a major, preventable public health problem. More than 33,000 people kill themselves each year according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but suicide deaths only account for part of the problem. An estimated 25 attempted suicides occur per every suicide death, and those who survive suicide may have serious injuries, in addition to having depression and other mental problems. In Calhoun County, an alarming amount of middle and high schoolers reported seriously considering suicide, attempted suicide, or felt sad and hopeless.
