SUICIDE
GOAL: Reduce the suicide mortality rate in Calhoun County
HOW ARE WE DOING? Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death among all ages in Michigan, and the ninth leading cause of death in Calhoun County. Calhoun County experienced a higher rate of suicide when compared to both the state and the nation in 2015. Males suffered a higher burden of suicide mortality compared to females in both Calhoun County and the state that year, accounting for over 64% of all suicide deaths at the county level and 78% at the state level. In 2015, in Calhoun County, there were 11 suicides in the 25 to 54 year-old age group. The leading method of suicide death in 2014 was firearm, accounting for over half (54.5%) of suicide methods, followed by hanging/suffocation (31.8%) and poison (13.6%). At publication time, this data was not yet available for 2015.
