Communicable Disease
CCPHD's Communicable Disease program is dedicated to the investigation, prevention, intervention, control, and surveillance of communicable diseases in Calhoun County. There are 76 communicable diseases that are mandated to be reported in the state of Michigan. They can be broken down into categories based on disease type, some of which can been seen represented in the graphs below. Each of the figures contain confirmed and probable cases for each disease group. Graphs with quarterly counts are preliminary until the end of the calendar year.

Foodborne Illness Cases
The above graph shows the number of foodborne illness cases in Calhoun County from 2019 to 2023 divided up into quarterly counts. Some of the pathogens included in these counts are campylobacter, cryptosporidiosis, E. coli, listeriosis, norovirus, salmonellosis, shigellosis, and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). The number of cases rises during the summer months due to the increase in parties, gatherings, and festivals held during this time.

The viral hepatitis graph above include all hepatitis cases seen in Calhoun County over the last 5 years broken down by quarters. The count includes both chronic and acute illnesses for hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E. After a peak seen in 2020, the number of cases seen each quarter fluctuates from around 10 to 20. CCPHD conducts case management with hepatitis C cases and helps to link them to treatment either with their primary care physician or through our clinic.

This graph show the number of meningitis cases seen in Calhoun County each year from 2019 to 2023. These counts include aseptic meningitis, bacterial meningitis, meningococcal disease, and invasive Streptococcus pneumoniae. Meningitis cases have seen an overall declines in the past five years, with a dip seen in 2020 during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Vaccine Preventable Disease Cases
The graph above shows the number of cases caused by a vaccine-preventable disease during the year. Diseases seen in this category include chickenpox, measles, mumps, pertussis, polio, rubella, tetanus, and shingles. Cases have risen from 2019 to 2022, with a dip in 2020.
