TCC Report Card 2017 - Employment Growth
EMPLOYMENT GROWTH GOAL: All individuals and families in Calhoun County will be economically self-sufficient
RATIONALE FOR CHOOSING INDICATOR: Employment change is a timely economic performance measure for local areas. It is highly dependent upon the competitiveness of the area’s base companies (firms that sell goods or services to customers located outside the area). In the past, the area’s manufacturers made up the area’s base activities. Today, professional services are becoming a significant component of the area’s base. As these companies grow, they generate jobs and income that support the area’s non-base jobs such as outpatient health care, restaurants and retail outlets. Employment growth increases the probability for people to move up in their career paths and potentially increase earnings, and the ability of those struggling in poverty to find employment or move up to a better-paying position.
