M-STEP/COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS
GOAL: All students in Calhoun County will demonstrate proficiency of basic academic standards
RATIONALE FOR CHOOSING INDICATOR: The Common Core State Standards were developed to provide a consistent set of expectations for K-12 education that outline the knowledge and skills students need to be career and college-ready. The Common Core serve as a framework around which a curriculum can be built. The Michigan State Board of Education adopted the Common Core State Standards in 2010, with full implementation in the 2014-15 school year. Subsequently, the Michigan State Legislature required the Michigan Department of Education to develop a new assessment, a system known as the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress, or M-STEP. English Language Arts and Mathematics are assessed in grades 3 through 8; Science in grades 4 and 7; and Social Studies in grades 5 and 8.
