TCC Report Card 2017 - Absenteeism/Compulsory Attendance
ABSENTEEISM/COMPULSORY ATTENDANCE GOAL: Increase school attendance by helping parents overcome barriers to getting children to school
RATIONALE FOR CHOOSING INDICATOR: Absenteeism as early as kindergarten has been associated with greater absenteeism in subsequent years, lower achievement in math and reading, and an increased risk of dropping out of high school. i Michigan requires children to attend public school (except if enrolled in an approved non-public school) during the entire school year from the age of six to their 18th birthday. ii Chronic absenteeism (truancy) is described as 10 or more absences in a school year. Each local school district has its own attendance and reporting policies, which can account for some discrepancy in data among schools. Students who are chronically truant may be referred to the Calhoun Intermediate School District (CISD) who may then meet with parents to develop an Education Service Plan. Failure to comply with the plan may lead to filing of a court petition by CISD.
