GOAL: Reduce the heart disease mortality rate for all residents of Calhoun County

RATIONALE FOR CHOOSING INDICATOR: Heart disease places a large burden on the United States both health-wise and financially. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. One in every four deaths is a result of heart disease. Heart disease costs the United States approximately $207 billion dollars each year due to the cost of healthcare services, medications, and lost productivity. Key risk factors for heart disease include high blood pressure, high LDL cholesterol and smoking. Other risk factors include having diabetes, being overweight or obese, poor diet, physical inactivity and excessive alcohol consumption.
