Growing Through Loss Program

An Effective Practice

Description

The “Growing Through Loss” Program is a collaborative effort by the YMCA Urban Mission Branch of Indianapolis, Indianapolis Juvenile Correctional Facility & Indianapolis Grief & Loss Consulting Services to provide a therapeutic, educational & support program to at risk youth who have experienced losses such as death, divorce, abandonment, sexual or physical abuse, pregnancy loss, etc. “Growing Through Loss” provides a supportive group learning experience that facilitates healing and an understanding of how grief and loss issues influence behavior.

Goal / Mission

The goals of the program are to reduce the levels of depression and risk of destructive behaviors among grieving adolescents.

Results / Accomplishments

The following statistics are a result of a five-year pre and post study consisting of 452 adolescents completing the Program. The Beck Depression Inventory was used to collect data regarding levels of depression. The BDI is a standardized instrument with clearly established validity and reliability. The average BDI score for females in the program dropped from 23.6 (moderate to severe depression) before the program to 11. 4 ( mild to moderate depression) after the program. Males saw a similar decrease, from 22.6 before the program to 11.4 after participating in the program.
